Waters and health problems

All waters could have potential health problems. Water is the most single leading cause of pathogenic disease in the world.

Waters' potential health problems should never be underestimated. Bio pollutants are the biggest indoors problem due to their humid environment. Water damage is divided into three general categories;

- Category 1: Clean Water
- Category 2: Gray Water
- Category 3: Black Water

The Category of water contamination is not by color of water, but it is by source, contents, history and characteristics of water contaminant.

Category 1

Clean Water, originates from a source that does not pose substantial harm to humans. for example, clean water source could be broken water supply lines, tub or sink overflow with no contaminates, appliance malfunctions involving water supply lines, melting ice or snow, falling rain water, broken toilet tanks and toilet bowls that do not contain contaminants or additives.

Clean water that has contact with structural surface and content materials may deteriorates in cleanliness as it dissolves or mixes with soils and other contaminants as time elapses.

Category 2

Gray water contains a significant level of contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if consumed by or expose to humans. Gray water carries microorganisms and nutrients for microorganisms.Gray water sources may include, but not necessarily limited to, discharge from dishwasher or overflow from washing machines, overflow from toilet bowls with some urine ( no Feces), sum pump failures, seepage due to hydrostatic pressure, broken aquariums and punctured water beds. Gray water may contain chemicals, bio-contaminants (fungal, bacterial, viral, algae) and other forms of contamination including physical hazards.

Category 3

Black water, contains pathogenic agents and is grossly unsanitary. Black water includes sewage and other contaminated water source entering or affecting indoor environment. Toilet backflows that originate from beyond the toilet trap is considered black water contamination regardless of visible content or color.

Category 3 water includes all forms of flooding from seawater, ground surface water and rising water from rivers or streams. Such a water source carry silt and organic matter into structures that creates black water conditions.

The water is considered to be Category 3 water in situations where structural materials and /or contents have been contaminated with such contaminants as pesticides, heavy metals, or toxic substances.

Any person with compromised immune systems, respiratory or allergies, or who are under 2 years must remain off the job site where there is black water situation, until the area is safe for living.

Water Damage Restoration is an simple as A, B, C.

A. Remove as much water as quickly as possible in a liquid form.
B. Vaporize the remaining moisture as quickly as possible.
C. Remove the vaporized air as quickly as possible.

Classes of Water Damage

Class 1: Slow evaporation rate: Water losses that affects only part of a room or area, where minimum moisture is absorbed by material.

Class 2: Fast evaporation rate: Water losses that affect the entire room or carpet and water has wicked up walls 12 - 24".

Class 3: Fastest evaporation rate: Water may have come from overhead, ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushion and sub-floor and the entire area is saturated.

Class 4: Specialty drying situations. These consist of wet materials with very low presence/porosity (hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, stone, crawlspaces). Typically, there are deep pockets of saturation, which normally require very low specific humidity.

For drying the water damage area we need to know the class of water involved, the size of area affected and the dehumidification option.

Drying Goals

Use Moisture meter to measure the existing moisture contents of similar non affected area. These readings will establish our drying goals.

Extraction removes water 1,200 times faster than dehumidification. A typical extractor by professional water damage technicians will pull about 25 gallons of water a minute, while the best humidifier will pull about 30 gallons a day. That is a huge difference in drying process, where for every drop of water that you leave behind during extraction, you will need to spend 1,200 times longer trying to evaporate it from the carpet and pads.

There will be dramatic improvement in drying time if the emphasis is put primarily on the complete extraction first. It can reduce the overall job time by days, not hours. Invest the time to affect a through extraction. This would be the first step in success when drying building components, especially when drying those components in place.

Air Movers

Air movers work by having a powerful blower wheel driven by a thermally protected electric motor. As the wheel in air mover spins, it discharges a large flow of air through the snout at higher speed.


Dehumidifier works on the principle of condensation, the same as an air conditioner or refrigerator. The advantages of dehumidifier include their portability, low electric usage, initial cost and the fact that they work best at conditions most desirable for drying, high temperatures and high humidity.
